Fire Brick Refractory
Insulating Fire Brick ( IFB’s ) are also known as soft bricks. IFB’s (a primary hot face refractory) is a lightweight refractory made from selected ceramic raw materials. Capable of withstanding high temperatures and are selected based upon the intended application and use within that application. Depending on the refractory environment an IFB can be used as a backup, safety lining, or a hot face refractory lining (working lining).
What is Insulating Fire Brick Used For?
Typical uses are to insulate a range of kiln and furnace designs in the production of products. This requires significant heat to initiate or complete a chemical or metallurgical process. Refractory fire brick is typically used in the refractory linings in conjunction with dense firebrick and castables.
Most insulating firebricks are not capable of supporting a load of any significant amount. Some caution needs to be used in the design of any structure calling for IFB’s.
IFB’s due to their constituents are very thermally efficient and inherently thermal shock resistant. These properties usually permit rapid heat up. Assuming other refractory components present in the same unit, do not require slower heat up.
